Most Americans do not realize that within remote Appalachian Mountain areas of North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia and Kentucky, there are families that live in conditions that parallel that of the world’s poorest developing nations.

Shelter Rock meets the needs of the Appalachian Mountain impoverished with the giving love of Jesus Christ. The organization is a 501c3 non-profit, inter-denominational Christian ministry dedicated to identifying the poor of Appalachia and providing them with immediate relief.

Working as Missionaries, Steven & Catherine Reese moved to the Appalachian Mountains in 1998 to serve the poor of the region. They founded the Christian Outreach Organization, Shelter Rock, and began searching remote areas for impoverished families.

They discovered people still living on dirt floors made bare where the wood had been pulled up by single mothers and burned for heat. Their hearts were broken for the children they found living in conditions that parallel that of third world countries.

Many homes were without electricity because they could not afford the basic necessity. Others were draining rainwater from catch basins through windows without panes and into shacks where they would take sponge baths. Shelter Rock endeavors to bring hope and fullness of life to those living in crushing poverty. They seek to facilitate eternal change for Americans peering through the windows of inhumane shelter.

Shelter Rock depends totally on the financial support of those who partner with them. Their partners are people who have seized an opportunity to be involved in God’s work.

Shelter Rock Relief Teams minister with provisional relief to not only help save lives but also lead men, women, and children to new life in Jesus Christ.
